When a 16-year-old boy in first-century Israel wanted to become a serious student of the Torah, he didn't just enroll in a school. He found a well-known rabbi and asked, "Can I study under you?" The rabbi would evaluate him: Does he have what it takes? Is he passionate, disciplined, teachable? If the boy passed a grueling oral exam, the rabbi would speak the three most coveted words in the Hebrew language: "Come, follow me." For the next 15 years, the student would shadow his rabbi, learning not just information but intimacy—how to be like the teacher.
Now picture Peter and Andrew on the Sea of Galilee, casting nets. They're not studying under a rabbi. They're fishing—because their father fished, and they didn't make the cut. They got the rejection letter. They were the kids picked last, or not picked at all.
Then Jesus walks by and says, "Come, follow me."
Pastor and author Robby Gallaty explains why this moment matters so much: "Jesus is the first rabbi in human history who goes after his disciples." In every other system, the student pursued the teacher. Jesus flipped it. He saw something in these overlooked fishermen that nobody else saw. And he still does that today.

Show Notes
The Transfiguration might be the strangest scene in the Gospels. Jesus climbs a mountain, his face lights up, and two men who have been dead for centuries, Moses and Elijah, are suddenly standing there talking with him. Most sermons rush right past it. Robby Gallaty wants to stop and sit in the weirdness. Robby is the senior pastor of Long Hollow Church in Hendersonville, Tennessee, the founder of Replicate Ministries, and a preacher with a PhD who has given his life to making disciples. And he says that to understand the Transfiguration, you have to understand the mountain. Set against Mount Hermon, a place the ancient world treated as thick with supernatural meaning, the scene becomes a window into the enchanted world Jesus actually lived in.
Robby argues that the modern church has a truncated view of the supernatural, and that we have traded the awe that changes us for the amazement that only entertains us. He unpacks the rabbi culture behind the words come follow me, the difference between knowing about Jesus and being known by him, and the single comma in a 1611 Bible that he says kept the church in a coma for four hundred years. This episode is part Bible study, part testimony, and part invitation to wonder again. Maybe the real question is this. When was the last time you sat long enough to be in awe of God?
