Dracula - Chapter 24 (Bite 2)

The hunters have caught Dracula in England, but they know he is not finished. In this chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Van Helsing explains why the Count will not simply retreat: he is a predator who has tasted human blood and will keep coming. The group must now plan to pursue him back to his Transylvanian castle, but a new and terrible complication emerges—Mina Harker is changing, and the vampire’s influence may already be turning her into a threat from within.

Van Helsing argues that Dracula is not the kind of enemy who accepts defeat. He compares the Count to a man-eating tiger that, once it has killed a human, will never again be satisfied with other prey. Dracula, he says, is the same: “he never ceased to prowl.” The Count’s entire project—learning new languages, studying modern society, mastering finance and law—was a patient, deliberate campaign to conquer a great city. His glimpse of England only sharpened his hunger. Van Helsing warns that if such a being “was to come from God and not the devil, what a force for good might he not be in this old world of ours.” But because he is a monster, the hunters are “pledged to set the world free.” Their work must be secret, because in an age that doubts what it sees, skepticism would become the Count’s “sheath and his armor.”
