Dracula - Chapter 21 (Bite 3)

In this chapter of Dracula, Mina Harker, held close by her husband Jonathan, describes in her own words the night she was forced to drink the Count’s blood from a wound in his chest. The scene is the emotional and strategic low point of the novel: the vampire hunters have lost their advantage, their evidence is burned, and one of their own has been turned against them from within.

The chapter opens with Dr. Seward telling Jonathan Harker exactly what happened to Mina. Jonathan listens with “seeming impassiveness,” though his nostrils twitch and his eyes blaze. Seward notes a strange detail: while rage works convulsively across Jonathan’s face, his hands tenderly stroke Mina’s ruffled hair. The split between fury and tenderness is the emotional core of the scene—Jonathan is both a man whose wife has been violated and a husband who must not break in front of her.

Quincey Morris and Arthur Godalming arrive with bad news. Godalming reports that Dracula has been in Jonathan’s study. All the manuscript evidence has been burned—the blue flames still flicker among the white ashes. The phonograph cylinders are destroyed too. Seward interrupts with relief: “Thank God there’s the other copy in the safe.” But the relief is short-lived. Godalming hesitates, then adds that Renfield is dead. Mina raises her head and says solemnly, “God’s will be done.”
