The Big Mad Morning Show's March 16 episode started with a surprising statistic: 1.7 million vehicles were repossessed in 2024, with some estimates suggesting the total could reach 3 million per year. That works out to roughly 140,000 to 250,000 cars repossessed every month in the United States — about three to four repossessions every minute.

The Business of Repossession

The hosts walked through the economics of the repo industry. Independent contractors typically earn $250 to $500 per standard repossession, and $500 to $1,000 for harder jobs involving hidden cars, long searches, or luxury vehicles. If one truck handles 80 repossessions a month at $350 each, that's $28,000 in gross revenue — but after insurance, truck payments, and driver pay, a repo company nets roughly $4,000 to $8,000 per month depending on volume.

The conversation also touched on airplane repossession, which operates differently. Planes don't have keys, so repo pilots simply fly them away to another airport. Globally, about 300 aircraft get repossessed per year — a tiny fraction of the 30,000-plus commercial fleet. The hosts noted that planes are often leased, and these "quiet repos" happen without public announcement.
