The Greek word pneuma has the same range of meaning as the Hebrew ruach—wind, breath, or personal energy of a human or of a deity. And in the Gospel of Luke, pneuma appears more than in any other New Testament narrative. Luke is pulling out all the stops, trying to say everything about Jesus of Nazareth and the people around him through the lens of the Spirit.
The Spirit Before Birth
Luke opens not with Jesus or Mary, but with a priest named Zechariah in the Jerusalem temple. An angel tells him that his elderly wife Elizabeth will bear a son, John, and that "he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother's womb." This is the first mention of Spirit in the New Testament, and it is deliberately puzzling. Pneuma also means breath, yet John is filled with God's breath before he has ever taken one of his own. He will live on God's presence more than on his own life-breath.

Show Notes
Spirit of God E9 — Our conversation on the Spirit of God is turning the corner from the Hebrew Bible to the New Testament. The word for “spirit” in the Greek New Testament is pneuma, and like ruakh, it also means “wind,” “breath,” and personal energy related to a person or deity. While all the gospels mention the Spirit of God, or Holy Spirit, Luke is the leader by far with 78 references in his two-part collection of Luke-Acts. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore how deeply the Holy Spirit is integrated into the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
