Why Were Nazis Obsessed With Birth Rate?

A booklet from the 1930s shows a peaceful rural retreat: wooden beams, shutters, candle arbors, a lake with a weeping willow. It looks like a lovely getaway for pregnant women. Then you notice the swastika. This was Lebensborn — "spring of life" — an SS organization that historian Lisa Pine has studied for decades. The homes were part of a much larger Nazi project to control who could have children, who could not, and what happened to the babies that resulted.

The demographic panic behind the policy

The Nazis did not invent their obsession with birth rates. Germany's birth rate had been declining during the Weimar years, and the First World War had left a demographic deficit. But the Nazi response was extreme and fast. Within months of taking power in 1933, they introduced a compulsory sterilization law. Between January 1934 and September 1939, 0.5% of the German population was forcibly sterilized — not people the regime considered racially inferior, but ethnic Germans deemed to have hereditary illnesses: blindness, deafness, schizophrenia, physical disability. The state did not want these conditions passed to the next generation.
