Why HBM Eats Everything
To understand the price spike, you need to understand the difference between the memory in a consumer PC and the memory in an AI server. Consumer GPUs use GDDR memory, which sits flat on a circuit board. AI GPUs use HBM, which is vertically stacked — multiple memory dies are piled on top of each other and connected through an interposer, a separate piece of silicon. That stacking is what gives HBM its speed, but it also makes it much more expensive to manufacture. A single HBM package can consume up to 32 DRAM dies, and if one die in the stack fails during assembly, the entire stack is ruined.
