When a Perfect World Shatters
In February 2015, Liz Houghton was riding high. She had just sold the first stake in Mint Velvet, the fashion brand she'd built from her kitchen table with three colleagues. She took her husband and three children to New York for a celebratory trip — "pinch me" moments, she calls them. Seven weeks later, she was at work when her husband called to say their 20-year-old son Will had been in a cycling accident. The police were coming to get her.
"I was like, oh, okay," Houghton recalls. Will was a cycling obsessive who often fell off his bike. But when the police car drove her from High Wycombe to Southampton Hospital with blues and twos, she began running scenarios. If he's disabled, she thought, he'll be great at the Paralympics. If it's the worst, I'll revolutionize road cycling safety. "Because I'm the project manager of any kind of stress."
When she arrived, her legs wouldn't hold her. A young consultant came into the small room and said: "I've got to tell you, it's unsurvivable."
"This noise came out of me," Houghton says. "I just literally crumbled." Her son was alive — breathing, perfect-looking, with a fresh haircut she would have hated — but he wasn't going to live.
