What actually happened in India

In April 2025, a peaceful tourist town in Kashmir turned into a killing field. Twenty-six innocent tourists were shot dead by armed men who appeared from the forest, demanding to know whether their victims were Hindu or Muslim. One woman, watching her husband fall, screamed at the attackers: "Kill me too." A terrorist laughed in response. The attack in Pahalgam didn't come from nowhere—it was the latest flashpoint in a conflict that stretches back nearly eighty years, through four wars, countless smaller skirmishes, and a shadow war of cross-border terrorism that has left both nations armed with nuclear weapons and staring each other down.

The partition that never healed

The roots of the current crisis trace to 1947, when British India was divided into two independent nations: Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. The split was catastrophic. Over 15 million people were forced to move—Muslims from India, Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan—in one of the bloodiest mass migrations in history, with more than a million dead. Entire neighborhoods that had coexisted for centuries were torn apart. As the host put it, "That trauma didn't just vanish. It turned into resentment."
