Amazon’s Lord of the Rings MMO: Third Age, Safe Bet, Big Questions

Amazon is making a Lord of the Rings MMO. That much is confirmed. But as Asmongold works through the announcement in real time, the conversation reveals a tangle of genuine excitement, hard-won skepticism, and a central tension that defines the whole project: how do you build a living world inside an IP where the story is already finished, the rights are famously restrictive, and the safest creative choice might also be the most boring one?

The Setting Is the Third Age, and That’s a Problem

The game will be set in the Third Age, the same period as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Asmongold initially hoped for the First or Second Age, eras he describes as “way fucking cooler” because they’re less mapped out. The First Age offers Morgoth, wingless dragons, and a mythic scope that feels fresh. The Second Age gives you Númenor, the forging of the Rings, and Sauron’s rise. The Third Age, by contrast, is “so fleshed out” that it risks becoming a theme park.

“We know all these characters. We know everything that’s gonna happen,” he says. “It’s so much of an agreed-upon and understood world that I think it would be boring to have an MMO inside of it.”
