Discord's age verification is the new normal

Discord announced it will require a face scan or government ID for full access starting next month, setting all accounts to "teen mode" by default unless adults verify their age. The platform's press release frames it as "enhancing age-appropriate protections while maintaining privacy," with a system that uses video selfies for facial age estimation and deletes identity documents "in most cases immediately after age confirmation." But the host of this episode sees this as something much bigger: the leading edge of a transformation that will remake the entire internet within five years.

The inevitability argument

The host's central claim is that this isn't really about Discord. It's about where the internet is going, and resistance is futile. "This is the new normal. Welcome to the new normal, gentlemen," he says. "Every single website in probably five years is going to have some variation of this."
