The cookout was supposed to be a graduation party. The nine-year-old narrator was excited to show off his room to a new potential friend—the son of Richie, an old school friend of his mom's. But Richie showed up alone, claiming his son was with his ex. After a game of catch, Richie asked for the bathroom. He was gone for a long time. When he finally emerged, his face was red, his eyes were watery. He stomped past the boy on the porch, straight toward the father, and started screaming that he didn't deserve the mother. He shoved a hand in his pocket and claimed he had a gun. The grandfather tried to intervene and was knocked to the ground. That’s when the father—a police officer and former boxer—knocked Richie out cold in one blow. There was no gun. Only a wallet and a small baggie of powder. The boy learned years later that Richie was the mother's high school ex-boyfriend. The invitation had been innocent. The reaction was not.
