Lord Chesterfield's letters to his son, written in the eighteenth century, are one of the most controversial and widely read texts in the history of manners. They were never intended for publication—they were private letters from a father to his illegitimate son, Philip Stanhope. But after Chesterfield's death, his son's wife, Eugenia Stanhope, pushed for their publication, reportedly as an act of revenge after being left out of Chesterfield's will. The letters became wildly popular in the 1770s, often ranking among the top ten most popular books in English libraries. They were repackaged with titles like The Principles of Politeness and The Fine Gentleman's Etiquette, marketed as self-help manuals for aspiring gentlemen. But reading them today, what stands out is less the advice on etiquette than the deeply uncomfortable portrait of a father-son relationship built on conditional love, relentless criticism, and a vision of virtue that is always, ultimately, self-serving.
