AI Summary
5 min readIn 2009, First Trust launched a fund called GRID (ticker: GRID) focused on modernizing the power grid. At the time, the narrative was about integrating wind and solar. Nobody was thinking about AI. Sixteen years later, the fund sits at roughly $12 billion in assets, up from about $1 billion in 2023. The methodology has not changed. The catalyst has.
Why AI Suddenly Made the Power Grid the Bottleneck
For decades, U.S. electricity demand was expected to grow less than 1% per year. Grid operators planned accordingly. Then came ChatGPT in late 2022, followed by a wave of data center construction that upended those assumptions. The bottleneck is no longer just Taiwan Semiconductor’s chip fab capacity. It is also the physical infrastructure required to get power to the data centers.
Ryan Isakainen, senior vice president and ETF strategist at First Trust, explains that the power grid was designed roughly a hundred years ago for centralized power generation—coal plants sending electricity downstream. It was never designed for the two-way flow, intermittency, and massive new demand that AI requires. Upgrading this system is not a single factory project. It involves permitting, environmental studies, transformers, transmission lines, towers, meters, and all the components in front of and behind the meter. The timeline is measured in years to decades, not quarters.
