Fifty-six million years ago, something dumped trillions of tons of burned carbon into Earth's atmosphere. The planet heated up by eight degrees. A third of ocean life died. And when scientists add up every suspect—volcanoes, methane, everything—the numbers don't add up. Something is missing from the math. Before asking who did it, there's a bigger question: could Earth even keep the evidence? In 2018, NASA's Gavin Schmidt and astrophysicist Adam Frank ran the numbers, and the answer is uncomfortable: after fifty million years, an industrial civilization and a natural disaster leave exactly the same mark in the rocks.
Why the Fossil Record Is Nearly Useless
The single best test case for how much of the past survives comes from a 2021 study led by Charles Marshall at UC Berkeley. The team asked how many Tyrannosaurus rex ever lived. They started with body mass—roughly 5,000 kilograms for a full-grown adult—then applied Damuth's law, which states that bigger animals fit fewer individuals into a given area. The result: a standing population of about 20,000 individuals at any moment, spread across 2.3 million square kilometers. Over the species' 2.5-million-year existence, roughly 2.5 billion individual T. rex lived and died on this planet.

Show Notes
What if something existed on Earth millions of years before us — and almost every trace of it has already disappeared?
Earth is a surprisingly poor archive. Fossils are extraordinarily rare, ancient seafloor is continuously recycled, landscapes erode, and even enormous structures can disappear over geological time. The deeper into the past we look, the less complete the record becomes.
In this documentary, we investigate a fascinating scientific thought experiment: if an industrial civilization had existed tens of millions of years ago, would we actually be able to detect it today?
We explore fossil preservation, disappearing landscapes, ancient climate events, unusual carbon signatures, geological recycling, and the limits of what rocks can tell us about Earth’s distant past.
The evidence does not demonstrate that an earlier industrial civilization existed. Instead, it reveals something arguably more intriguing: over immense spans of geological time, many of the clues we would expect to find may become extremely difficult — or impossible — to recognize.
Then there is one particularly fascinating chapter in Earth’s history: a dramatic global warming event roughly 56 million years ago, accompanied by an enormous change in the planet’s carbon cycle. What caused it, what survived in the geological record, and how confidently can we reconstruct events that happened so long ago?
Maybe the biggest mystery isn’t what existed before us.
Maybe it’s how much of Earth’s history has disappeared forever.
💬 Do you think we could recognize the traces of an industrial civilization after tens of millions of years?
