The Massive Underground Cities We Weren’t Supposed to Find

In 1963, a Turkish farmer knocked down a wall in his basement to fix a damp corner. Behind it was cold air and a passage dropping 85 meters into an eighteen-level city built for 20,000 people. He was not alone in finding one. Across continents and millennia, cultures that never met each other all reached the same conclusion: stop building up, start cutting down. The result is a hidden world of underground settlements, refuges, factories, and cathedrals—most of which were forgotten until someone accidentally broke through a wall.

The French Refuge Beneath the Wheat Fields

Northern France, an hour from the coast, looks like ordinary farmland. Underneath sits a hidden settlement of nearly 300 rooms, more than two kilometers of tunnels, and space for 3,000 people with their animals and grain. The region of Picardy sits on the flat corridor between Paris and Flanders—for about a thousand years, the express lane for every army in Western Europe. Vikings, English armies, Spanish troops, and freelance mercenary bands all came through. Peasants could not fight cavalry with hoes or outrun horses while carrying a pig. Building a wall was illegal and advertised that you owned things worth stealing.
