Listen Now: Dan Taberski’s Manifesto

In February 2013, a former LAPD officer named Christopher Dorner murdered a young couple in their car in Southern California, firing fourteen shots with what investigators believed was a silenced weapon. The victims were 27-year-old Keith Lawrence and his fiancée, 28-year-old Monica Quan. The crime was not a robbery—her engagement ring and necklace were untouched. Police quickly identified Dorner as the suspect, warned the public he might kill again, and pointed to something he had left behind: an 11-page manifesto posted on Facebook. As one news anchor put it at the time, “It’s stunning.”

That moment is the entry point for Dan Taberski’s new podcast series, Manifesto, produced by Audible Originals and Please and Thanks Productions. Taberski, known for Hysterical and Missing Richard Simmons, is trying to reclaim the manifesto from mass shooters and nihilists and return it to artists, warriors, visionaries, and ordinary people with something to say. The series compares notes with radicals, secessionists, internet trolls, and punk singers, all trying to turn anger into the world they want to see. Along the way, Taberski reads his own manifesto about manifestos. The central question: how close can we get to our rage before it takes on a life of its own?
