At the Makina conference in Paris, the All-In podcast hosted four robotics CEOs whose companies represent different approaches to the same question: when will robots do useful work outside of factories, and what will that cost? The answers ranged from "it's already happening" to "less than a decade from hard takeoff," with a recurring tension between industrial deployment today and the promise of humanoids entering homes by 2026.
The Four-Legged Robot That Already Works
Dr. Peter Funkhauser, CEO of Anybotics, makes the Anymal — a four-legged inspection robot deployed in oil rigs, wind farms, and chemical plants. The quadruped form factor won out because "a lot of animals have four legs" for good reason: stability on slippery floors, stairs, snow, and uneven terrain. Funkhauser pushed back on the idea that humanoids will replace four-legged robots, arguing that the use cases are different. "If you need to work in a coffee shop, narrow spaces, you want to work at eye level," he said. In industrial facilities, there's enough space for four legs, and the stability advantage matters more.
