The fourth Eisenhorn novel, Magos, was published nearly a decade after the original trilogy, and it shows. Dan Abnett returned to his most famous character as an older, wiser writer—and the result is a story less about heroic action and more about confronting the cost of a life spent fighting monsters. The book is a bridge between Eisenhorn's solo adventures and the later Bequin series, introducing the King in Yellow as a major antagonist while forcing Eisenhorn to reckon with what he has become.
A New Kind of Investigation
Magos takes place roughly a century after Hereticus. Eisenhorn is now nearly two centuries old, his body broken and scarred, his face so damaged he cannot smile. The story is unusual because it is not told from Eisenhorn's point of view. Instead, the reader follows a retired Magos biologist named Drusher, a timid, divorced man who has spent years cataloging every animal on the backwater planet Gershen. When a group arrives at his door—including Eisenhorn's ally Medea Betancore, the mercenary Harlan Nail, and an Inquisition interrogator named Voriet—Drusher is dragged into an investigation of eighteen bodies found over several years, supposedly killed by a local bird of prey.
