In the suburbs of Long Island's Limbrook in 1984, teenagers roamed freely without cell phones or constant tracking, hanging out at places like Hotskates roller rink. That June, 15-year-old Kelly Morrissey vanished after using a payphone near a Shell station; police initially treated it as a runaway case. Five months later, her acquaintance 16-year-old Theresa Fusco left her job at Hotskates upset after being fired and never arrived at her best friend Lisa Kaplan's for a sleepover. Her body turned up 25 days later near railroad tracks, beaten, raped, and strangled under leaves and pallets.

Linked Disappearances and Early Suspicions

Kelly Morrissey's mother Iris and others doubted she ran away, noting her sociable nature and lack of resources. Theresa's father Thomas and brother John joined massive community searches. The cases seemed linked—same neighborhood, similar ages, known to each other through friends like Vicky Papagno. A third girl, 19-year-old Jackie Martarella, disappeared in March 1985 walking to her Burger King shift in nearby Oceanside; her decomposed body, also raped and strangled, was found a month later on a golf course. Investigators saw patterns but prioritized Theresa's homicide due to the body.
