The story begins on December 4, 1972, in Merced, California, a small farming town in the shadow of Yosemite National Park. Seven-year-old Steven Stainer was walking home from school when a man in a car offered him a ride. The man was Irvin Murphy, a slow-witted accomplice working for Kenneth Parnell, a convicted child molester who worked at the Yosemite Lodge. Parnell had decided he wanted a son, and he recruited Murphy to help him find one. They drove Steven east on Highway 140, toward the park. Parnell stopped at a payphone, returned, and told the boy: "Your parents, I just spoke to them. They no longer want you. You're gonna be my son."
For seven years, Steven lived as "Dennis Parnell." He was drugged, isolated, and sexually abused. Parnell moved them constantly—Santa Rosa, a remote trailer in Compche, finally a cabin in Manchester. Steven enrolled in school as Parnell’s son. The school never checked his records. By outward appearances, he adjusted. He had a girlfriend, played sports, smoked cigarettes. Parnell let him do whatever he wanted—drugs, alcohol, freedom to come and go. But Steven was trapped by dependency, shame, and a twisted attachment to the only parent he had left.
