5 min readWhen a Parent Becomes Estranged
The 18Forty podcast’s Passover series on intergenerational divergence culminates in an extended conversation with a father, his daughter, and estrangement mediator Adam Pollock about a family that spent five to eight years completely cut off from one another. The episode is framed by host David Bashevkin’s insight that the story of Joseph and his brothers—which hovers quietly throughout the Passover Seder—is ultimately about the clarification that Jewish identity cannot be lost, even when a family member becomes estranged. The conversation that follows is a raw, unpolished account of what that estrangement actually looks like and how one family found their way back.

Her parents divorced when she was 13, and neither she nor her father knew how to be present for each other during the fallout. “We both didn't know what the other person needed,” she says. “No one taught us how bad it could end up and none of us had the tools to set ourselves up for success.” Over time, seeing her father became a source of strain rather than connection. She eventually blocked his number and stopped opening emails. The decision was not dramatic—it was the result of accumulated pain she could no longer carry.
