“I was the most cynical anti-Hasidus anti-spirituality person in the entire universe,” says Rabbi Dr. Shlomo Pill, describing his mindset before his life unraveled. A childhood friend of host David Bashevkin, Pill grew up in the same Orthodox community, attended the same yeshiva, and seemed to embody the “rabbi doctor” ideal—a law professor with a PhD in comparative Jewish and Islamic legal studies, deeply learned in Torah. But beneath the credentials, a quiet desperation was metastasizing. Pill’s story, shared on the 18Forty Podcast, is a case study in a kind of suffering that the Jewish community often overlooks: the suffering of the overachiever, the valedictorian, the person at the front of the class whose struggles remain invisible because their external life looks so successful.
